Indian numbering system

Rupees in Words: Lakh, Crore and Paise

Indian financial English groups large values differently from the international million-and-billion system.

How Indian Grouping Works

After the final three digits, Indian notation groups digits in pairs. One lakh is 1,00,000 and one crore is 1,00,00,000. Therefore 12,34,567 is “Twelve Lakh Thirty-Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-Seven.” The international form of the same value is 1,234,567, or “One Million Two Hundred Thirty-Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-Seven.”

Use one system consistently. Mixing “million” and “lakh” in a single phrase makes review harder and can create ambiguity.

Rupees and Paise Examples

FiguresWords
₹1,250.00One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty Rupees Only
₹1,25,000.50One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand Rupees and Fifty Paise Only
₹1,00,00,001.05One Crore One Rupees and Five Paise Only

Use “Rupee” only for exactly one rupee and “Rupees” otherwise. “Paisa” is singular; “Paise” is plural. Keep two decimal digits in the numeric version even when the paise value is below ten.

Document Review

Confirm whether the receiving form expects Indian grouping, the exact currency label, and the word “Only.” For invoices, convert the final payable total after GST and adjustments. For cheques, follow the bank's line format and close unused space.
