Write the numeric amount in the small box using dollars, a decimal point, and two digits for cents. On the long amount line, begin at the far left and spell out the whole-dollar portion. Connect compound values from twenty-one through ninety-nine with hyphens, then write the cents as a fraction with 100 as the denominator. A check for $1,234.56 can read “One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and 56/100 Dollars Only.”
Always use two digits in the numerator. Five cents is 05/100, not 5/100, and an amount with no cents is 00/100. For a check below one dollar, write Zero before the cents fraction. The word “and” separates the whole dollars from the cents; it does not need to appear inside the whole-number phrase in standard American financial style.
After the written amount, draw a line through any unused space so no additional words can be inserted. Confirm that the numeric box and written line agree before signing. If the amounts conflict, a bank may rely on the written amount, delay the item, or reject it according to its procedures. Avoid overwriting or squeezing corrections into the amount line. Begin with the whole-dollar number and read it from the highest place value to the lowest. In $12,450.08, the whole portion is 12,450, so write “Twelve Thousand Four Hundred Fifty Dollars.” Next, read the two decimal digits as cents. The decimal .08 is Eight Cents in Standard output or 08/100 in Check output. The complete Standard wording is “Twelve Thousand Four Hundred Fifty Dollars and Eight Cents.”
Use the singular unit only when its value is exactly one. USD 1.01 is “One Dollar and One Cent,” while USD 2.01 is “Two Dollars and One Cent.” Zero and all other values use the plural form. Keep a leading zero when cents are below ten, especially in a fraction: 08/100 is clearer and harder to alter than 8/100.
For invoices, contracts, reimbursement forms, and accounting records, Standard output is usually easier to read because it names both Dollars and Cents.
